thank you very much for your letter. I feel very much relieved that something has been done to the story and that you think it might sell. Of course, the translaters in new York are few. I have quite some experiences with them. Maida Darnton, perhaps is the best, but your agent will know about that.

As for Männer kennen heim, it was sent off to Dorothy Thompson before I met you, and probably went to Carl Brandt (?) who up to now sold my stories. As I haven’t heard from either of them, I will write today and tell them, that I asked you to look after my stories. Of course I ment to motivate this change by saying that the material had to be translated in Paris, as no German scripts can be sent by mail …

I do hope your agent will find somebody who can do translation. I read the story here to two american girls who loved it and didn’t think it’s too long, but a dutchman and a viennice girl thought it too long, and I had feeling it bored them. As a matter of fact I did not read well, I was tired and besides had an “épine” in my eye. A cactus that I wanted to save from cold shot it right into my Eye and I had to go to Nice to had it out, my Eye got bad and I had to run about with a bandaged Eye, feeling as good as blind . . I know that the American public likes descriptions and going into things explicitely.

Well, let’s hope. A girlfriend of mine here started to translate “Dorothy becomes Italian”, but only for her own pleasure. I will let you have what she has done about it. If you think it good, she can go on, but its very likely its no good, and she will not mind at all, to let somebody else do the job. I cannot juge, of course.

I will now let you have the second story wwhich might sell too but the theme is not so very much in the line of the States. as a work it is, from the literary standpoint of view, better, I think. I wrote to Ernestime, but had no reply . . unfortunately. ? (1 word)

Now I will finish the third story, which is more of an interpretational human interest . .

Needed piece. “Die Novelle Männer kehren heim handelt von einem Mädchen, das von heimkehrenden Soldaten vergewaltigt wird.” Warum? What is the reason behind this horror/tragedy? it’s not autobiography of some sort, so why?

épine in relation to a cactus is a thorn. (Part of Wikipedia article on Google, “Glochids or glochidia (singular "glochidium”) are hair-like spines or short prickles, generally barbed, found on the areoles of cacti …)

Nice is supposedly nurse as she’s the one who could help.
